Match Odds Explained: Odds Formats, Asian Handicap and Over/Under

Odds are the language of sports betting. If you cannot read them confidently, you cannot tell whether a bet is good value. This guide explains the four odds formats shown in the MYCS33 sportsbooks, how to convert between them, how to calculate probability and margin, and every Asian handicap and over/under line with worked numbers.

The four odds formats

Decimal (European) odds

The simplest format. The odds show the total return including your stake. A RM10 bet at 1.90 returns RM19 if it wins — a profit of RM9.

Hong Kong (HK) odds

Shows profit only per RM1. HK 0.90 means a RM10 bet makes RM9 profit. Formula: HK = Decimal − 1.

Malay odds

The most common format on Asian sportsbooks, with values between -1.00 and +1.00:

  • Positive odds (e.g. 0.90): the same as HK. Bet RM10, win RM9.
  • Negative odds (e.g. -0.80): your stake is the amount you win, and you risk stake × 0.80. Bet RM10 at -0.80: win RM10 or lose RM8.

Indo odds

Similar to American odds divided by 100. Positive Indo (e.g. 1.25) = profit per RM1 staked. Negative Indo (e.g. -1.25) = the amount you must stake to win RM1.

Odds conversion table

2.501.50-0.671.5040.0%
3.002.00-0.502.0033.3%

Quick formula: negative Malay → Decimal = 1 + (1 ÷ |odds|). For example, -0.80 → 1 + 1.25 = 2.25.

Implied probability and margin

Implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds. Odds of 1.90 imply a 52.6% chance. If you believe the true chance is higher than that, the bet has value.

Add up the implied probabilities of every outcome in a market and you will get more than 100% — the excess is the sportsbook’s margin. For example, a handicap with both sides at 1.90: 52.6% + 52.6% = 105.3%, a margin of about 5%. Lower-margin markets give players better long-term returns, which is why comparing prices between different sportsbooks is worth it.

Asian handicap explained

Asian handicap gives the weaker team a virtual goal head start. The favourite "gives" goals (a negative line) and the underdog "receives" goals (a positive line). On most Asian sportsbooks the team giving the handicap is highlighted — often in red.

The table shows the result of a bet on the team giving the handicap:

LineAlso writtenWin by 1Win by 2+DrawLose
00 / Draw No BetWinWinRefundLose
-0.250/0.5WinWinLose halfLose
-0.50.5WinWinLoseLose
-0.750.5/1Win halfWinLoseLose
-11RefundWinLoseLose
-1.251/1.5Lose halfWinLoseLose
-1.51.5LoseWinLoseLose

Worked example: a -0.75 handicap

You bet RM100 on Selangor -0.75 at Malay odds of 0.90. The stake is split in two: RM50 on -0.5 and RM50 on -1.

  • Selangor win 1-0: RM50 on -0.5 wins (+RM45); RM50 on -1 is refunded. Net profit: RM45.
  • Selangor win 2-0: both halves win. Profit: RM90.
  • Draw or loss: both halves lose. Loss: RM100.

For the team receiving the handicap, the outcomes mirror the table. For example, +0.25 wins half if the match is drawn.

Over/Under lines

Quarter lines work just like handicaps — the stake is split across the two neighbouring lines.

Bet1 goal2 goals3 goals4 goals
Over 2.25 (2/2.5)LoseLose halfWinWin
Over 2.5LoseLoseWinWin
Over 2.75 (2.5/3)LoseLoseWin halfWin
Over 3LoseLoseRefundWin

"Under" bets are the reverse. For example, Under 2.25 wins half if exactly two goals are scored.

Why odds move

Odds are not static. They change because of team news (injuries to key players, line-ups announced about an hour before kick-off), weather and the flow of money in the market. Big moves just before kick-off usually reflect new information. If you are confident in your analysis, taking an early price can sometimes offer better value — the risk is bad news after you have bet.

Odds-reading checklist

  1. Switch the display to the format you understand best in the sportsbook settings.
  2. Identify which team is giving the handicap and the line.
  3. Convert the odds to implied probability and compare it with your own view.
  4. Confirm the estimated return on the bet slip before you hit confirm.

Frequently asked questions

What do negative Malay odds mean?

With negative odds, your stake is the amount you win, and your maximum loss is the stake multiplied by the odds value. For example, RM10 at -0.80 wins RM10 or loses RM8.

What does a 0/0.5 handicap mean?

It is the same as -0.25: half the stake on 0 and half on -0.5. If the match is drawn you lose half your stake and the other half is refunded.

Which odds format is best?

No format gives a better price — they all represent the same probability. Pick the one you understand most easily. Beginners usually find decimal odds clearest.

How do I calculate probability from odds?

Divide 1 by the decimal odds. Odds of 2.50 imply a 40% probability.

Why is the team giving the handicap shown in red?

It is a display convention on most Asian sportsbooks to help you spot the favourite quickly.
