How sports betting works
Every market has odds that reflect the probability of an outcome, plus the sportsbook’s margin. When you bet, you lock in those odds. If your prediction is correct you are paid at that price, even if the odds move afterwards.
The margin is how a sportsbook makes money. In a balanced handicap market you might see both sides at Malay odds of 0.92 rather than 1.00 — that gap is the margin. How to read every odds format is explained in our match odds guide.
The main bet types
1X2 (match result)
The most basic bet: 1 for a home win, X for a draw, 2 for an away win. It settles on the result after 90 minutes plus injury time.
Asian handicap
A handicap gives one team a virtual goal advantage or deficit to balance the match and remove the draw. For example, if you back Johor Darul Ta’zim -1.5, JDT must win by at least two goals. Quarter lines (-0.25, -0.75) split your stake into two halves — we explain them with full examples in the handicap section.
Over/Under
You bet on whether the total goals will be over or under a line, such as 2.5. Over 2.5 wins if there are three or more goals. The same market exists for corners, cards and basketball points.
Odd/Even
A prediction of whether the final goal total is odd or even. A 0-0 result counts as even.
Correct score
Predict the exact final score. The payouts are high because it is hard to call, but the sportsbook margin on this market is usually higher too.
Half-time/Full-time (HT/FT)
Predict the result at half-time and at full-time. For example, "Draw/Home" wins if the score is level at the break and the home team wins at the end.
First-half markets
Handicap, over/under and 1X2 settled on the first 45 minutes only. Make sure you do not mix up first-half and full-time markets.
Outrights
Long-term bets on the league champion, tournament winner or top scorer. Your money is tied up for a long time, but early-season prices are often attractive.
Mix parlay
Combine several selections from different matches into one bet. The odds multiply together, so the payout can be huge — but every selection must win. In a parlay, a handicap selection that pushes counts as odds of 1.00, and a half-win counts at half the profit.

Bankroll management: the habit that matters most
No betting strategy can outrun poor bankroll management. Disciplined players follow these principles:
- Keep a separate betting bankroll — money you can afford to lose entirely without affecting bills or savings.
- Bet in units. Stake 1–3% of your bankroll per bet, not random amounts based on how you feel.
- Record every bet — date, market, odds, stake and result. You will quickly see which markets actually work for you.
- Keep long parlays small and treat them as entertainment.
- Never chase losses. Doubling up after a loss is the fastest way to empty a bankroll.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Backing your favourite team on emotion rather than analysis.
- Ignoring the margin — odds of 0.80 and 0.95 on the same market give very different long-term returns.
- Misreading a first-half market as full-time.
- Betting on leagues you do not follow just because a match is on.
- Betting while angry, tired or under the influence of alcohol.
Basic settlement rules
Most football markets settle on 90 minutes plus injury time, excluding extra time and penalty shoot-outs, unless the market says otherwise (for example "To qualify"). Postponed or abandoned matches are usually voided and stakes returned if they are not played within the window set by the sportsbook.
